If you want to live in an affluent part of San Diego that is right near the coast, University City is a beautiful neighborhood to consider.
In this post, we will share all the reasons with you why University City should be your next home. But first, let’s give a little background on this district.
A Brief History of University City
University City, sometimes just known as “UC,” is located at the site of what was originally a Kumeyaay trade route. It later became part of El Camino Real, and afterwards, was the site of a rifle range base called Camp Calvin B. Matthews.
In 1964, the base closed, and UC San Diego was built. Naturally, this is why the neighborhood has the name “University City.”
While the UCSD campus is one major landmark in the area, another iconic sight is the spires of the San Diego California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has been located there since 1993.
Today, the neighborhood is an upscale place to live, ideal for young professionals.
Advantages of Living in University City
- You are close to North County, but not too far from the rest of San Diego. One reason to live in University City is its geography. It is located right above North Clairemont, with Miramar to the east and La Jolla and Torrey Pines to the west. Heading north along I-5, you will soon reach Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas. At the same time, it is only a short drive to Pacific Beach, Kearny Mesa, downtown San Diego, and other locations in the county. In short, if you cannot decide whether you want to be centrally located or living in North County, it is the best of both worlds.
- You are living near the beach and Torrey Pines. What is also great about the location of University City is that you are very close to the beach, and just a short drive away from Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. At the reserve, you can hike by yourself, or you can go on a guided hike.
- There are canyons for hiking. Speaking of hiking, University City also boasts additional trails in Rose Canyon and San Clemente Canyon. So, if you are the outdoorsy type, you will probably really love it here.
- You get some cool air off the coast. Yet another benefit of the geography of this area is that some cool air off the coast should reach you, keeping you cooler than you would be if you were living in a neighborhood that is farther inland.
- It is perfect for young families. Many of the residents of University City are young, affluent professionals. This is a great spot to settle down as part of a dual-income household. In fact, you will love bringing up your children here because of the high quality schools as well as all of the family-friendly activities and destinations in the area.
- Activities and amenities abound. We already talked about all of the opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors when you are living in University City, but there are plenty of other things to do in the vicinity as well. For example, there are several golf courses nearby. Not only that, but they even welcome children. You will also want to drop by the Westfield UTC outdoor mall.
