If you have been following along with real estate news in San Diego, you are well aware that there is a severe housing shortage right now. While many factors have contributed to that dearth, one of them is a simple lack of open land for building.

San Diego and North County are already densely packed with houses, apartments, stores, and office buildings. Only so many new housing units can be constructed in these parts of the county.

There is still significant open land in Santee, however—so that is one part of San Diego county where quite a few new homes are going up. In fact, just last year, 72 new houses, condominiums, and apartments were constructed.

While that on its own would be huge, it is just the start. Right now, there are 500 homes being built in Santee, and the city is reviewing applications to build an additional 3,500.

While this is exciting news, it does put Santee in a quandary in some respects. One of the draws of the community is the small town feel which it has managed to cling to over the decades. But that doesn’t change the fact that right now, what most people in San Diego need most is simply somewhere to live—and Santee is the community which has the space.

So, if you have been looking for housing and have not been able to find it closer to downtown, it may be worth your time to check into some of the new and upcoming developments in Santee. Santee probably will not retain its “small town” character for long, but there should be some great housing opportunities here over the months and years to come.

Plus, it is worth keeping in mind that Santee is still on the outskirts of San Diego. Even though it will look and feel more crowded and busy, it is still within a stone’s throw of the beautiful mountains and deserts to the east.
